As a practicing painter and writer, I know that preparing an artist statement is already difficult enough without the added challenge of communicating in a language beyond your native one. The ekphrastic translation of a visual practice into written form as well as the tight summarization of a literary life into a compelling paragraph demands economy and poetry.
Sometimes language barriers muddle our writing into babbel, but usually we just leave an error or two—”my work is especial.” After all, we have more important work to do: the art itself.
Thus, artists for whom English is a foreign language are invited to submit their webpage biographies and brief statements for a quick review for English-language copy editing on a pro bono basis.
Teliost is also available for hire to write, translate, copy edit, and consult on larger written documents, artist books, descriptions for gallery exhibitions, and beyond.
